Partnership Expands Opportunities for Young Food Scientists in Tanzania

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania — Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) continues to strengthen its leadership in practical, skills-based education that contributes to national development and global sustainability. On 25 September 2025, SUA participated in the launch of the Mo-Kerry Scholarship Programme in Dar es Salaam, a new initiative dedicated to nurturing Tanzania’s future food technologists.

The event was officiated by Professor Caroline Nombo, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, and attended by H.E. Nicola Brennan, Ambassador of Ireland to Tanzania, together with senior representatives from government, academia, and industry. The occasion underscored the value of collaboration between education, enterprise, and policy in preparing young professionals for the country’s evolving food and nutrition sector.

Building a stronger foundation for food science education.

The Mo-Kerry Scholarship Programme, a partnership between the Mo Dewji Foundation and Kerry Group, aims to strengthen human capacity in food science and technology. The initiative brings together SUA and the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) in a shared effort to promote education that combines academic rigour with industrial experience.

The year-long, fully sponsored programme integrates coursework, laboratory practice, and workplace attachment within MeTL Group factories and other partner facilities. Students will cover subjects including food safety, microbiology, nutrition science, product development, sensory evaluation, and sustainable processing. This blend of theory and practice prepares graduates to support resilient food systems and contribute to responsible industrial growth.

Food science students at SUA gain practical experience in product formulation and quality assurance.

Encouraging innovation through partnership.

The collaboration demonstrates how academic institutions can work closely with the private sector to expand learning opportunities and address practical challenges in food and nutrition. It reflects SUA’s continuing efforts to align its teaching and research with the needs of society and the economy.

The University is investing in a mini food-processing facility to enhance hands-on learning and innovation in value addition. Revised curricula now emphasise competence-based education and structured internships, ensuring that graduates are equipped with the knowledge, adaptability, and confidence required to support modern agricultural transformation.

A continuing commitment to transformation.

The Mo-Kerry partnership reflects SUA’s broader mission to apply science and innovation in ways that improve livelihoods and encourage sustainable progress. The University’s expanding network of collaborations demonstrates how higher education can contribute to economic resilience, environmental responsibility, and inclusive development.

Through such partnerships, SUA continues to translate academic excellence into real-world impact — building knowledge that benefits communities, strengthens national capacity, and contributes to a more secure and sustainable future.
