ANH Academy Week 2025

OUTREACH

Sokoine University of Agriculture delivers extensive outreach and community engagement services that connect research, knowledge, and innovations directly to farmers, youth, and rural communities across Tanzania. These efforts strengthen practical agricultural skills, promote technology adoption, and support inclusive rural development.

SUA conducts short, hands-on farmer trainings and practical demonstrations tailored to the needs of smallholder farmers, farmer groups, youth agripreneurs, cooperatives, and community organisations. Training areas include improved crop and livestock husbandry, horticulture, seed production, irrigation and water management, agro-processing and value addition, soil and water conservation, climate-smart agriculture, beekeeping, poultry and rabbit production, mushroom cultivation, and other enterprise-oriented agricultural skills.

Knowledge dissemination is delivered through farmer field schools, village-based trainings, demonstration plots, field days, and on-farm advisory visits, ensuring that farmers gain practical, immediately applicable techniques. These participatory approaches help communities adopt modern technologies, improve farm productivity, and enhance livelihoods.

SUA’s outreach efforts are further strengthened by the Mkulima Library, an innovative resource that provides farmers with free access to agricultural information, practical guides, training materials, videos, and advisory content in friendly formats. This platform supports continuous farmer learning and strengthens information access at grassroots level.

The University also reaches wider audiences through agricultural exhibitions, open-day events, technology showcases, and participation in national events, including the Nane Nane Agricultural Expo. These platforms allow SUA to demonstrate innovations, engage the public, and share knowledge with farmers, agribusiness stakeholders, policymakers, and community leaders.

Through these outreach and farmer-focused engagement services, SUA enhances community capacity, accelerates agricultural transformation, and supports national rural development goals.

These outreach services are coordinated by the Institute of Continuing Education (ICE).
