Solomon Mahlangu Campus – Mazimbu, Morogoro

A campus rich in Pan-African heritage and home to the College of Natural and Applied Sciences and the School of Education — serving as SUA’s hub for science teacher training and applied sciences.

The Solomon Mahlangu Campus (SMC), located approximately 10 kilometres from the main campus at Mazimbu, holds deep historical and Pan-African significance. Named in honour of Solomon Kalushi Mahlangu, a South African freedom fighter, the site formerly hosted the Solomon Mahlangu Freedom College (SOMAFCO), established by the African National Congress (ANC) during the South African liberation struggle.

Today, the campus is home to the College of Natural and Applied Sciences (CoNAS) and the School of Education (SoE). It offers academic programmes in education, environmental science, information and communication technology (ICT), and hydrogeology, and serves as a university hub for training science teachers who contribute to improving the quality of science education across Tanzania. The campus also hosts the Centre for Communication and Lifelong Learning (CCLL), which coordinates short courses, community outreach, and professional development programmes that extend SUA’s expertise to farmers, educators, and development practitioners.

The Solomon Mahlangu Campus is also a centre for innovation and applied learning. It hosts the Vuyisile Mini Furniture Factory, which provides hands-on experience in wood technology, design, and craftsmanship, as well as the Apiary Unit, which supports research and training in beekeeping, honey production, and value addition. These facilities enhance experiential learning, innovation, and entrepreneurship among SUA students.

The campus features modern lecture theatres, laboratories, hostels, and ICT facilities, creating a vibrant and inclusive learning environment. Its historical legacy, coupled with its contemporary academic and outreach roles, reflects SUA’s enduring commitment to education, scientific advancement, and Pan-African solidarity. The Solomon Mahlangu Campus continues to serve as a centre for teacher education, applied sciences, and community empowerment, advancing Tanzania’s national and regional development goals.
